About Amharic Keyboard

Amharic Keyboard is a free, browser-based tool designed to make typing in Amharic — one of the world's oldest written languages — accessible to everyone, anywhere, without installing any software.

What is Amharic?

Amharic (አማርኛ) is the official working language of Ethiopia and is spoken by over 35 million people as a first language, with tens of millions more as a second language. It is written using the Ethiopic script, also known as Ge'ez or Fidel (ፊደል), one of the oldest continuously used writing systems in the world.

The Fidel script is an abugida — each character represents a consonant-vowel combination. There are over 200 characters in common use, organized into families of 7 vowel orders. This makes typing Amharic on a standard QWERTY keyboard challenging without the right tools.

Our Mission

Our mission is to remove the technical barriers to typing and understanding Amharic online. Whether you are a native speaker who needs to type a message in Fidel, a student learning the language, a researcher, or a developer building Ethiopian-language software, this tool is built for you.

We believe language tools should be free, fast, and easy to use. Everything on this site runs in your browser — your text is never stored on our servers.
