Learn the Amharic (Ge'ez) Script

The Ethiopic writing system — known as Ge'ez or Fidel (ፊደል) — is one of the oldest continuously used scripts in the world, dating back over 2,500 years. This guide will help you understand its structure and start reading and writing Amharic.

How the Script Works

The Ethiopic script is an abugida (also called an alphasyllabary). This means every character represents a consonant + vowel combination, not a single sound. The base shape of a character comes from its consonant, and the vowel is indicated by a modification of that shape.

Each consonant has 7 vowel orders (forms). The first order is the base form, and each subsequent order adds a small change to indicate a different vowel. Once you learn the base shapes and the pattern of vowel modifications, you can read the entire script.

Words are written left-to-right, just like English. Sentences are separated by a special Ethiopic full stop character (two vertical dots), and a word separator (single dot) is sometimes used between words in older texts.

The 7 Vowel Orders

Using the consonant (L) as an example, here are all seven vowel forms:

leä (1st)Base / neutral vowel
luu (2nd)As in "foot"
lii (3rd)As in "feet"
laa (4th)As in "father"
leyē (5th)As in "lay"
lə (6th)Schwa / reduced vowel
loo (7th)As in "flow"

Ethiopic Numbers

The Ethiopic script has its own numeral system. These are still used in some traditional and religious contexts, though modern Ethiopian texts often use Arabic numerals.

Tips for Learning the Script

  1. 1Start with one consonant family at a time. Master all 7 orders of one consonant before moving to the next.
  2. 2Focus on the most common consonants first: H, L, M, S, R, B, T, N, K, and W cover the majority of everyday vocabulary.
  3. 3Use the Typing Reference panel in our keyboard tool to see every character alongside its typing key. This builds muscle memory quickly.
  4. 4Practice writing common words you know. Recognizing ሰላም (selam), አዎ (yes), and ቤት (house) early on gives you confidence.
  5. 5Read children's books or simple texts in Amharic. Repeated exposure to the script in context is the most effective way to internalize it.
  6. 6Use the AI assistant to check your writing and ask for explanations of words or grammar rules.
